Karma Wen Kiang
With a name like “Karma” I’ve always had a profound understanding that what I put out into the world is what will come back to me and growing up on Maui gave me a strong sense of the wonder and fragility of the natural world around me.
I’ve carried a refillable water bottle since my teens and the same reusable grocery bag in my purse for 20+ years. I’ve seen the benefits to Hawaii’s turtle population from discontinuing single-use plastic grocery bags on Maui, so I not only carry it, but I USE it too! I also appreciate that there are more sharks (apex predators) around Maui too because the turtle populations are healthier.
I designed my bachelor’s degree in Environmental Ethics in the early 1990s and named my only child Ocean Chi in recognition of the ocean’s importance to the life energy of our planet. I know that the actions of one woman will not change the planet, but I’m hopeful that my example will influence many others to action and as a snowball rolling down a mountain can become an avalanche, so can the small actions of many become impactful to the whole.
Aloha,
Karma
